Welders and Machinists Have a Head Start in Additive Manufacturing. Here Is How to Use It

North American additive manufacturing hit $9.55 billion in 2025 and is growing fast. Aerospace, defense, automotive, and medical device manufacturers are all scaling their AM capabilities right now, and they are struggling to find people who can run the equipment. For skilled tradespeople, that gap is an open door.

Additive manufacturing—the industrial term for 3D printing—builds parts and components layer by layer from digital models, using materials ranging from plastics and resins to high-grade metals and stainless steel powders. It sits alongside traditional subtractive manufacturing rather than replacing it. Most advanced facilities use both. That workflow requires people who understand both processes. And right now, the people who do are in short supply.

The Roles That Are Opening Up

Additive manufacturing technicians

This is the most direct entry point for tradespeople transitioning into 3D printing. Technicians operate and maintain industrial printers, load and manage materials, monitor print jobs, and handle post-processing steps like support removal and surface finishing. Machinists and CNC operators have a significant advantage here: the mechanical aptitude, precision mindset, and equipment familiarity transfer directly.

Metal AM operators and powder specialists

Metal additive manufacturing—printing components from steel, titanium, aluminum, or specialty alloy powders—is one of the fastest-growing segments in the industry. Steel mills, powder producers, aerospace manufacturers, and AM service bureaus are all expanding their technical teams, and many of these roles never hit public job boards.

Machinists and welders with metallurgy knowledge are a natural fit. A machinist moving into metal AM brings an understanding of tolerances, material behavior, and equipment calibration that takes years to develop from scratch.

Quality control and inspection technicians

Every printed part needs to meet precise specifications. In high-stakes industries like aerospace and medical devices, quality inspection is non-negotiable. Tradespeople with experience in dimensional inspection, GD&T (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing), and precision measurement are in high demand as AM production scales up.

CNC and hybrid machine operators

As noted above, most advanced manufacturing environments run additive and subtractive processes side by side. Hybrid machine operators who can work across both are among the most versatile and most sought-after roles in modern manufacturing. CNC operators who add AM certification to their credentials are positioning themselves for a significant pay and career bump.

Welders moving into laser and directed energy deposition

Directed energy deposition (DED) is an additive process that uses a laser or electron beam to fuse metal powder or wire, essentially a high-tech form of welding. Welders who understand heat input, metallurgy, and fusion quality have a natural bridge into these emerging processes. Today’s welders increasingly work alongside laser welding systems and robotic fabrication equipment, and that trajectory continues directly into AM.

How to Get There from Where You Are

The good news is that transitioning into additive manufacturing does not require starting over. It requires adding credentials to what you already know.

The SME Additive Manufacturing Certification is the most widely recognized credential in the field and is designed to complement existing trade certifications in machining, welding, and manufacturing technology. Community colleges and technical schools in most manufacturing-heavy regions now offer AM coursework, and many are accelerating program development to meet industry demand.

Employers entering the AM space are actively seeking tradespeople who can learn the technology rather than engineers who have never worked on a production floor. Hands-on mechanical experience is a competitive advantage in this field, not a consolation prize.

The Window Is Open

Manufacturing is reshoring. AI and automation are driving new investment in domestic production capacity. And additive manufacturing is at the center of that buildout. The tradespeople who move now—who add AM credentials to their existing skill sets and start positioning themselves for these roles—will enter a market where demand is outpacing supply and wages are rising to match.
